It was late when me and my squad wandered into the closed off uptown block. It was dark out, but still bright "actual darkness" standards. and things were escalating. we had been sent to clear the most dangerous parts of the enemy occupied zones. Like I had expected, we split up. I had never been more scared in my life. a freshie like me shouldn't be sent into such things.
I took the parking garage. totally empty. occasionally I heard a voice echo which sent chills down my spine, or a radio crackle making me jump. When I reached the roof of the parking garage, I scanned the horizon for any signs of activity. none. I was alone on the roof, brightly illuminated by the moon. I was a sitting duck. We knew the enemy had entered this area, and we knew they hadn't left. They were probably hiding. this was their territory and they knew it well. They could jump, they could run, and all I had... was my gun. I started towards a ladder on the left of the garage. I reached a roof and immediately aimed my gun at some movement, but it was nothing more than a mere newspaper blowing in the heavy winds.
The wind gave way to a light snow. It wasn't particularly cold to me, but I was so afraid that I must have not noticed my shivering and teeth chattering. I decided to continue along the roof until I reached a large skylight. I looked down and saw my teammate walking past. his presence gave me some comfort. I radioed to him. "I see youuuu" I said jokingly, the fear clearly ringing through my voice.
"ha. ha." he snapped back. "I ain't seeing anything, and Delphino hadn't either last time I caught up with him"
"what's say we meet up and find a way to the center roof where we can get a better angle?" I asked.
...There was no reply. a little bit of radio chatter. I tried again "Chief?" I said nervously, "You getting these?" and still nothing.
"must be a problem on his end," I said to myself as I radioed delphino to see if he could get him. "Delphino, see if you can contact chief" I said. Delphino didn't reply either. I had a feeling the messages were getting through. but there was no one left to answer them on the other end... It took me a moment to realize that they both had to be dead.
"shit" I uttered in a hushed whisper as I quickly swiveled around 360 degrees. I turned left, and without a second thought, Leapt to a balcony not ten feet away. I jammed the sliding glass door to the side. it broke off, but the glass thankfully remained intact. I soon decided that inside was the best place to be. less places to be seen from. less need to constantly be alert. my fear slowly creeped back, however, as I realized how dark my surroundings were. there was very little light, except for the blue glow filtering in through the window. I flicked on my Tac-Light on my UMP.45 Submachine gun and checked the closet, and bathroom of the room. no one.
I opened the door to the hallway, even the small "chrik" noise sounded like an explosion. The hallway's tearing wallpaper was lit with a dingy yellowish bloom. It was a loud colour, for such a quiet night. I kept my gun at the ready, it's hard plastic was damp and sweaty in my hot, gloved hands.
Suddenly a succession of "thps" sent a singe of searing pain into my right shoulder. I dropped my gun, and fell on my back, my pistol drawn and at the ready. the burning sensation ever more painful with each second. my left hand was useless with my pistol, I wobbled aiming down it's blurred sights. whoever my invisible assailant was, he was close. I couldn't move but maybe he would come to me.
He didn't, and, in the excitement, forgetting to patch my wounds, I bled out on the floor of a hotel room hallway, feeling as If I had become another statistic, and that I had accomplished nothing.
