Alluvian Republic Navy Profile
Name: Alex Slater
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Height: 5' 10"/1.78 m
Weight: 136 pounds/61.6 kg (body-mass index = 19.5: healthy)
Affiliation: Alluvia/ARN
Appearance:
Medium-length dark brown hair that she almost always has tied back and blue eyes, and a slender, but toned, athletic figure. When in casual clothes, she likes to wear a t-shirt and shorts, favoring white and blue over other colors. See gallery (pending)
Personality/psychological profile:
Alex should be best described as the ideal citizen-warrior. Confident, self-reliant, loyal to cause, country, and ideals, and loving of nature, she respects these same attributes in others, and does not respect others who lack these qualities. Privately, she enjoys spending time in nature as most Alluvians do, either in the mountains or from the air.
Background: The 'Mirror's Shards' or 'Mirror's Edge' timeline
There are at least two major timeline threads currently known to the Alluvian state. Each of these timelines is partially real, in a macroscoping version of the Schrödinger's Cat paradox: there are multiple quantum states of existence of the universe, and each of these states exists within a probability distribution, the sum (mathematically: integral) over which constitutes reality. Because all of these timelines are partially real and fundamentally part of the same universe, it is possible in essence to 'travel' between timelines, or, more accurately, for people or other objects in one timeline to interact with others in different timelines. The existence of these timelines is created by the creation of thermodynamic order, specifically the creation of information, and as such the level of reality of different timelines can be altered by acquiring or destroying corresponding concentrations of information. A brief summary of the known major timeline threads is as follows:
Timeline 1: the 'Alluvia' timeline, in which our nation of Alluvia was founded four years after the Libertas movement, itself an offshoot of the Vitalia movement in the United States, succeeded in repelling the development of a totalitarian state in the City that has subsequently become our capital. Lt. Cmdr. Alex Slater is arguably native to this timeline, although, because she is older than the split between different timelines, an alternate Alex presumably exists in the others as well, although the status of her counterparts cannot be determined at this time.
Timeline 2: the 'Mirror's Edge' timeline, in which the leader of Vitalia was assassinated, causing the movement to fail, and the lack of support subsequently led Libertas to fail as well, causing our own capital City to devolve into a police state. In this timeline, an illegal courier service calling itself the 'Runners' has or, alternatively, 'November', maintains communications between freedom fighters, some of whom are supporters of the Alluvian cause and seek to validate Alluvia's timeline. Comparatively little is known about the state of the world outside of the City in the Mirror's Edge timeline, but what hints we've been able to gather indicate that World War III or something close to it may be happening elsewhere in the world*. (The term 'Mirror's Edge' refers to how the Runners view their own state of existence, a sort of in-between of reality and fantasy in itself).
Known history of the timelines: it is fairly certain that the Mirror's Edge timeline is the more real of the two timelines, and that Alluvia and the timeline that Alluvia exists in are fading from existence as our timeline's portion of the probability distribution becomes smaller and smaller. Of particular interest is a woman in the Mirror's Edge timeline by the name of Faith Connors, who is one of the two daughters of the founder of Libertas. In the Mirror's Edge timeline, Miss Conners temporarily disabled the computer servers that run the police state's surveillance, which allowed Alluvian supporters to operate in the open briefly, which in turn enables us to hold on to some grip on our existence by these supporters' assembly of [classified information]. We are supporting Alex Slater, and any other agents as we can, to attempt to gather as much information as possible about the Mirror's Edge timeline, destroying any information sources the City's police state is using to perpetuate their timeline, in the hope that we can reconstitute Alluvia's timeline, save our country, and resolve the entire mess left behind by Vitalia's failure (and, if World War III really is happening in the background, possibly save the rest of the world as well!).
Unknown ambiguities concerning the Mirror's Edge timeline: we are fairly certain, due to a radio broadcast included in the information assembly that partially reconstituted Alluvia, that Faith Connors and her sister, Kathleen Connors, survived the destruction of the police state's computer systems and remain at large. However, alternative, but less reliable, reports indicate that both Connors sisters were killed shortly afterwards and that the media broadcast is in error. It is entirely possible that there are more than two timeline threads in existence here. If so, we are dubbing the timeline in which the Connors survived the 'Mirror's Edge' timeline, and the timeline in which they were killed the 'Mirror's Shard' timeline (so named both for the analogy of a broken mirror, and also because their putative deaths took place upon the police state's capitol building, a skyscraper known as the Shard).
*There is indication that the United States may have become involved in fighting a war with Russia in Serdaristan, Bolivia, and other places, possibly on American soil. See the file for the 'Bad Company' timeline for details.
Personal biographical sketch on Alex Slater:
Miss Slater is the third daughter of the founder of the Vitality movement, and is American by birth, but she has flown the Alluvian flag since soon after our nation's founding more than two decades ago. She majored in military studies at Alluvia's most prestigious university with sub-emphases in both biology and physics, knowing that the union of those two fields are what made her country and make its timeline not cease to exist entirely. Graduating among the best of her class, she has received training in flight avionics, which, second to her militia training that all Alluvian citizens undertake, and has fought in the growing conflicts in central Asia in what is probably the beginnings of the world-spanning conflict within the Mirror's Edge timeline(s). To date, she has received no fewer than eleven combat medals for outstanding performance, bravery, resourcefulness, and leadership in conducting a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Presently, her rank stands as a Lieutenant Commander, but she appropriately receives the respect of her subordinates, peers, and even her commanding officers.
Slater's personal life has been severely affected by the decaying status of the Alluvian timeline: according to her personal records, she has been married three times, but the events of her marriages have each faded out of existence along with, apparently, her would-be husbands.
Previous knowledge concerning Miss Slater in the Mirror's Edge/Mirror's Shard timelines:
We can be reasonably confident that the number of people in the City who know of the existence of Alex Slater is very small. Apart from a handful of Alluvian supporters who have effectively functioned as spies, the only two people likely to know of her are the aforementioned Faith Connors and Sebastian Silvine. Connors' knowledge, if she is alive, is an asset, but Silvine is a liability: he is vice-president of Silvine Security Systems (S.S.S.), which are responsible for most of the electronic and informatics hardware in the City, supplying Pirandillo-Krueger and other, corporate, entities. It is likely that Silvine, either the man or the corporation, will know or possess the information that is responsible for the reality of the Mirror's Edge timeline(s), and, as such, should be among Slater's primary targets. Locating the Connors sisters, ascertaining their status, and getting them out of the city to safety if possible, should also be high priority, as they may possess the information that, should we assemble it, will cause our timeline to reclaim the greater part of the wave function. Then, the police-state city will have to worry about its fading from existence, instead of us having to worry.
