Jacob sat at the edge of a high building, staring up at the sky. The building he was standing on top of was next to a music store with outside speakers that would occasionally play some classic songs. Jacob was listening to it play "If Six Was Nine" by Jimi Hendrix, and let the sun's rays beat down on his skin. Things have been stressful since the election, but after using the Internet (taking Isaac's advice), he found a route that had next to no patrols in it, most likely because nobody could do any real damage there. All the same, it was all Jacob needed to let his mind wander. He silently laughed to himself as the song had reached a certain part.
White collar conservative walkin' down the street,
Pointin' that plastic finger at me,
they're hopin' my kind will drop and die, but uh,
I'm gonna wave my free flag high,
That meaning was stronger now than it ever has been to Jacob. As he lounged on the rooftops, listeing to classic rock, he decided to pretend that he didn't notice the figure creeping up on him. Right when the creeper was within striking range, Jacob spun around, grabbed the attacker's hand, and was about to strike when he realized who it was. He was so surprised, that he could only let out a strianed whisper when he said her name.
"Linda?" He asked, baffled. The slender, fair skinned woman with her jet black hair tied into a pony tail stared into his eyes, as if not beliving for a second that Jacob was who he was. The two stayed there for a moment, both looking like they were about to strike each other, and after what felt like a lifetime, they let go.
"Where've you been?" Jacob asked, a smile creeping up his face. Linda kept her stone chissled face and stared Jacob down.
"You've grown." She said blankly. Jacob sighed.
"I know you must be mad, but listen, I--"
"Must be mad? That's the best you could come up with? It's been Five years, Jacob. Five years! You promised me you'd come back!"
Jacob held his had up in defense. "You don't understand. I'm doing what I said I'd do. I'm going help make everything better." He said.
"How do you think you're doing that?" Lind asked.
"I'm a runner! I'm part of the New November! You can be too! We can change the city, Linda!"
Linda shook her head.
"You're still as big a fool as ever, Jacob." Linda said, finally smiling.
"I no longer believe that. The only way we can make things better is to call for a new order." Linda said quietly. She then turned her back to him, about to leave.
"Wait, what do you mean?" Jacob asked, following her.
"I joined the NCO." She said nearly blankly. Jacob didn't reply. There wasn't anything he could say. Linda turned and faced Jacob, grabbing both his hands and staring into his eyes.
"Join us, we can make our dream real." She said whole-heartedly.
Jacob pulled his hads away.
"What are you talking about? Look around you! There's nothing to change, you can't make adjustments to this city, we need to wipe the board clean and start over. There's nothing that can be done with this place. There's no more life. It's dead."
Linda walked up to Jacob again, and hugged him. He slowly replied the hug.
"I'm sorry, Jacob." She said calmly. She then pulled away and kissed him on the cheek.
"I no longer believe that." She siad softly. With that, she turned away and ran off, disappearing as she dove off the building.
Jacob stood there, thinking about the arguement they'd just shared, as Jimi Hendrix's song reached it's final part.
I'm the one that's got to die when it's time for me to die... so let me live my life... the way I want to...
