The sun got in his way. Douglas shielded his eyes. He rolled up the window of his limousine. Looking forward he could see the once crowded streets of this City, were now a bit more bare.
He thought about a couple of things. They swirled in his head. Rubbing his chin in deep thought seemed like a nervous tick. Passing by a street corner, he told the driver to stop. Something had caught Douglas's eyes.
The driver nearly panicked when his boss stepped out. He looked into his rear view mirror. He was walking toward an alleyway. The driver stepped out as well, and called out, "Sir, you really shouldn't..."
A single palm up was enough of an order to the driver.
As the driver crept back into the limousine, Douglas approached a little girl. She was crying. Douglas bent down in an effort to not seem imposing. He reached out with his open hands.
"Are you ok? Need me to help you find your mother?"
The little girl backed away. But then, came nearer, and took the man's hands into hers. She nodded. Douglas lead her into the sidewalk and walked at her side. The driver tried to keep the slow pace, but had to turn into the streets since he was against traffic.
Douglas noticed her candy bracelet, and said, "Who made that for you?" The girl lightly responded with, "I did." She smiled at Douglas. He chuckled. "Good job. How old are you?"
"Eight."
"Where's your mother?"
"I don't know, we where going to the store when a man bumped into us. I fell and when I looked to where my mom was, she wasn't there."
This troubled Douglas quite a lot. He decided to turn and head toward the CPF station and continued their conversation on the way there. The driver soon caught up with them as they both entered into the police station. He stepped out of the limo and went inside as well.
"Well Alexandra, take care now, and if you can't find your mommy, you let me know. My name is Douglas. Ok?" Douglas nodded at the police men and they thanked the young man, and escorted her to the main lobby.
The driver smiles as his boss finally heads out of the CPF station. Though he gets the gumption to ask as they drive away;
"What happened to her?"
"Her mother abandoned her."
The driver got a confused look on his face, "So why did you walk her all they way to the CPF? I could've taken the both of you."
Douglas smiled. "Sometimes it's the little things that cause the biggest change. It's what my father says. I think I understand it now."
"I don't see.."
"Mark, just take me to my new offices, I'm sure father would love to see it finished before he's dead."
....
Douglas looked at the picture of his father on the wall. And the words beneath it.
"In loving memory of Douglas Garreth Forn II"
He didn't even notice that his phone was ringing. It rang enough to break him out of his spell. He remember the merger deal, and how he hadn't been ready to lay out his game winning move just yet. In a nervous tick he rubbed his chin.
Sitting down, he reached past a small glass cube with a candy bracelet in it, and grabbed the telephone.
"Hello? No. Very soon, my department will crunch some numbers for you. No. It'll be handled, the next quarter earnings will more than pay for it. I know her, I promise. Yes. OK. Good bye."
He hung up the receiver. Lifted it again, "Kaitlin, get me the City's Children Objective President. Schedule her in the next hour or so."
After a patrol about his office building, he didn't notice the time fly by. If he ever needed a favor. It'd be today.
He was in his office when she came in. He instantly got up and smiled. "Alexandra. So nice to see you again."
"And you Douglas. What did you need to speak to me about?"
"Close the door behind you, please. Private matter and all that."
She closed the door behind her.
